When to prune fruit trees

There are different types of pruning for different situations, aims, tree ages and fruit types, each of which are carried out differently and at different times of year. This can make decisions about how to prune your orchard a daunting prospect to the uninitiated. The table below gives a brief introduction to the aims, ideas and the season undertaken for the main methods of fruit tree pruning. Further information on each of these pruning types is given underneath the table.

‘Stone’ fruit requires different management to ‘pip’ fruit. Unless otherwise specified, these guidelines mainly refer to pruning apple and pear trees (pip).
