Hedgehog activities for schools

Our free hedgehog themed activities are best used with primary aged children. They cover a variety of national curriculum subjects and programmes of study, and can be carried out come rain or shine.

“My son’s primary school had a ‘hedgehog day’ at a farm where we used some of the PTES educational resources. They said it was ‘the best trip ever’ and returned home to hassle their parents to make holes in their garden fences!” – Ursula

Who are these activities for?

These educational resources are designed to be used by teachers and other educators and leaders, with school groups, kids clubs, scouts groups, girlguiding groups etc. The activities are aimed at primary aged children (KS1 and KS2) but can be adapted to suit your needs. They are based around the European hedgehog found in the UK.

If you are a child take a look at our kids area for fun things to do.

What subjects do they cover?

Although they are are mainly science based activities, they also involve elements of art and design, design and technology, computing, maths, citizenship and PE. Each activity has multiple links  to the current national curriculum for England listed in the leader’s notes.

Great! How do I get started?

Everything here is FREE. Simply click on the links below to download our teacher/leader’s notes for each activity. These detail the activity, list links to national curriculum programmes of study and state time and resources needed. They also include extension/higher level activities for you to adapt as you wish. Some activities also have additional work sheets to download.

What other resources do you have?

Visit the Hedgehog Street website to get access to more free downloadable resources, photo galleries and a forum, and become a HEDGEHOG SCHOOL! Hedgehog Street is a joint campaign from People’s Trust for Endangered Species and British Hedgehog Preservation Society.

We also have children’s activities for other mammals and stag beetles in our main education resources area here.
