All about the Mammals on Roads survey
How does the survey work?
The annual Mammals on Roads survey has been run by People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) since 2001. Over half a million kilometres of Britain’s roads have been surveyed so far, enabling us to target conservation action where it is most needed. One example of this is the fall in hedgehog counts that were the basis for projects such as Hedgehog Street and further research to uncover the reasons for the decline.
Taking part is easy and can make a huge difference to protecting our much-loved mammals. You’ll just need to tell us about your route and what you see along the way, dead and alive, via our app. With clear audio descriptions of each mammal, colourful illustrations and easy-to-use navigation, the Mammals on Roads app couldn’t be simpler to use. Set it running at the start of a journey and each sighting can be recorded with a few clicks. The survey should of course only be done by passengers. Car journeys of 20 miles or more are best, so there’s more chance of spotting something, but any journey – whether or not you see a mammal – is useful information.
You and your family and friends can take part on any number of journeys through the summer – perfect for those holiday getaways!
