Community Orchard Pruning Workshop (including formative pruning of young trees) – new date

March 21, 2021 @ 10:00 am - 3:30 pm

This one day workshop is aimed at people who care for community orchards which have been planted in the last three years and require initial pruning.  The emphasis will be on the pruning and care of apple trees but can be applied to pear trees too. Formative pruning of new trees will also be demonstrated. (Please note, this one day course will not cover the establishment of new orchards.)

No previous experience of fruit tree pruning is required.

All courses are socially distanced and Covid-aware.

£50 per person

 

Subjects included will be:

Assessing the structure of newly planted trees.

How to prune new trees to encourage formation of the main structural branches.

Identifying branches for retention and future development.

Assessment of tree health and habit.

Identifying structural problems that will affect the future stability of the tree.

Reforming the branching structure:  What to remove/what to retain, how much to remove along with how and when to do it.

Planning future pruning in subsequent years.
