Help hedgehogs in your neighbourhood
There is now considerable evidence for a dramatic decline in recent years but with your help all that can change
Hedgehogs are currently in severe decline in the UK, with around a third lost since the millennium. Worryingly, they seem to be doing just as badly in the wider countryside as they are in our towns and cities.
Fortunately, we know that hedgehogs love gardens and we know what features they need to survive and thrive in suburbia. This is why Hedgehog Street was born. Hedgehog Street is a joint campaign run by us and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS). It’s concerned with people, gardens and wildlife. Hedgehogs need connected neighbourhoods of gardens, rich in insects and free from hazards. Therefore, Hedgehog Street is about joining up the dots. It is also about empowering people with an understanding of hedgehogs, why they are declining, and how easy it is to help them.
It’s really easy to make your garden hedgehog-friendly. Just follow our top 10 tips and it won’t be long before your garden is a hedgehog haven.
