Legacy FAQs

Do I need to consult a solicitor?

Ideally, yes, as a solicitor will be able to provide expert advice.

Are there different types of legacies?

Yes, there are different types of legacies from which to choose:

A residuary legacy is what is left of your estate once your debts have been settled, tax has been paid and any legacies to other people have been paid or other gifts given. You may leave all or part of your residue to any person or charity you wish. This is potentially very valuable from our point of view, as normally a residuary clause contains the bulk of a person’s assets. A residuary gift can include the whole of your estate.

A pecuniary legacy is a specific sum of money given to a named individual or institution such as a charity.

A specific legacy is a gift of a specific item given to a named individual or institution such as a charity.

What if I already have a will?

If you already have a will and would like to leave a legacy to People’s Trust for Endangered Species, you may do so in the form of a codicil. You should consult a solicitor about this. Please let us know you have chosen to support our work, so we can let you know how grateful we are.

What if I wish to write my own will?

It is not advisable to attempt a homemade will. If, however, you wish to draw up your own will and you are confident that you can draw it up properly, there are certain forms of wording that will be a guide when drafting it. Please let us know you have chosen to support our work.

What is your charity number and where can I read more about your work?

People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) is a registered charity in England and Wales but our projects are global. Our Charity Commission Registered Charity Number is 274206. You can learn more about our work, including our annual report, here
