A helping hand for Britain’s hedgehogs

A few years ago, our Mammals on Roads survey revealed that hedgehogs are declining rapidly in Britain. Delving deeper in our State of Britain’s Hedgehog report last year, we discovered that since the 1990s, hedgehog populations plummeted by a staggering 30%, with as much as a 75% decline in some rural areas.

We’re dedicated to helping Britain’s hedgehogs thrive once again. By conducting research and participating in on-the-ground conservation, we’re seeking to understand the cause of the decline so we can tackle this challenge head on.

What we’re doing to help

We’re funding an innovative investigation into how roads affect hedgehogs and testing the effectiveness of road tunnels to help hedgehogs cross beneath our roads safely. The results are being used to guide developers and planners to include hedgehog tunnels in future developments, reducing road casualties and keeping hedgehogs safe.

We’re also examining which garden features hedgehogs require to thrive, and providing practical tips to make gardens more hedgehog friendly. Actions such as building a hedgehog house, providing a supplementary feeding station and creating a hedgehog highway (13 x 13cm hole in your fence) can all make a huge difference. What’s more, these hedgehog-friendly measures can be done at home in your garden or nearby green space.
