Winter Pruning

March 30, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Join FarmED’s Orchard Designer Andy Howard to learn the theory, skills and practice of winter pruning for fruit trees such as apple and pear.

On this workshop you’ll discover the different methods and techniques used to shape fruit trees, control their size and influence their productivity. You’ll also find out when and how to apply these techniques to suit different circumstances and different types of top fruit. Importantly, we’ll also discuss the differences between winter and summer pruning and when and how to prune pip fruit like apples and pears and stone fruit like plums and cherries.

We’ll put these lessons to the test in the FarmED multispecies orchard, where you’ll practice the theory on real fruit trees, in order to gain the skills and confidence to apply them in your own orchard, garden or community orchard.

Andy Howard is the founder and owner of the Heritage Fruit Tree Co. whose mission is to preserve, hand graft and grow the UK’s national fruit heritage and to supply fruit with flavour. He is a fully qualified teacher (P.G.C.E. F.E.) and trainer and runs winter, summer, budding, grafting and orchard planning courses with community groups and individuals. Andy is a regular contributor to BBC Radio Oxford and Berks and has featured previously on BBC Radio 4 Farming Today and BBC One on “Apples: British to the Core” Andy also designed and supplied all the trees for FarmEd 300+ Heritage fruit tree Orchard and recently supplied trees for the agroforestry project in FarmED’s CSA. www.heritagefruittrees.co.uk
