Grafting Workshop – 15th April 2023

April 15, 2023 @ 10:30 am - 3:00 pm

Grafting fruit trees - PTES

Learn to graft fruit trees with PTES Orchard Biodiversity Officer Steve Oram. You’ll learn how to make your own fruit tree to plant in your garden, school, a community orchard, or any little wild corner you can find. You’ll learn why we graft fruit trees and how to do it, and have the opportunity to graft one yourself from a wide range of varieties.

We’ll cover:

  • A brief history of grafting
  • Collecting and storing “scion” wood
  • A little about the various rootstocks and compatibility
  • And, most importantly, how to graft your own tree
  • …and you will be provided with aftercare options and instructions.

We’ll provide rootstocks, scion wood (the varietal part), and other materials for grafting. Rootstocks can be purchased on the day if you wish to graft more than one tree.

If you have your own secateurs and/or a suitable knife please bring them along. Knives that don’t have a bevel on the blade are better for grafting, such as Opinel knives (recommend a 7 or 8).
