SUMMARY:Apple Day - Museum of East Anglian Life
DESCRIPTION:How many ways can an apple nourish us?   \nJoin us and find out on October 23rd as the museum celebrates Apple Day 2021!   \nWe’ll be running an entire day of fun crafts\, tours\, and activities for visitors of all ages! You’ll be able to see live demonstrations of our apple press\, and taste-test a tantalising variety of apples and freshly-squeezed juice. Which apples are best for eating\, and which for drinking? Does juice pressed from a Bramley apple taste different to juice from a local Suffolk Pippin? How have people cooked\, stewed\, candied\, and brewed apples throughout history? Suffolk food historian Monica Askay will be there on the day to sign copies of her book Orchard Recipes from Eastern England (available in our gift shop) and share her insights into East Anglia’s rich food heritage.    \nThe event will be running during our usual museum opening hours of 10am – 4pm and is free with normal museum entry/membership.

SUMMARY:Winter Fruit Tree Grafting
DESCRIPTION:(Run in partnership with FarmEd) \nFruit trees have been grafted for centuries around the world\, yet the number of people with this skill in the UK is diminishing year after year. In this workshop\, led by Orchard Architect and Nurseryman Andy Howard of the Heritage Fruit Tree Co.\, you will learn how to graft your own fruit tree\, giving you the skills needed to bring back this important rural skill. We’ll take a look at the hundreds of variety of fruit trees at FarmED and use some of these trees as genetic resources for grafting new trees. By the end of the course you will have learnt: \n– The history of grafting and its importance today for fruit production – How to select\, collect and store “scion” wood and rootstocks for fruit tree grafting – The differences between different types of fruit trees and what you can graft onto – The types rootstocks available and how they affect the tree you produce – How to successfully graft your own fruit tree using more than one method. – Why a graft fails or succeeds and the aftercare required. \nPlus… you’ll get to take home your very own grafted fruit tree! \nWe’ll provide you with all the material you need as well as a hot seasonal lunch from the FarmEAT kitchen. All you need to bring is clothes suitable for getting a bit muddy and rained on (boots and gloves recommended!). \nIf you have your own secateurs or grafting knife please bring them along as the more practice with your own tools  the better grafter you will become (Andy recommends and uses an Opinel size 7 or 8 knife for grafting).  \nFriday 4th February 09.30 – 16.00   \nTo book visit Farm-ed.co.uk and book under  Events programme or click the link below: \n  \nv Price: £65 (supported) £80 (standard) £95 ( supporter) https://www.farm-ed.co.uk/event-details/fruit-tree-grafting]

SUMMARY:Hedgehog Ecology and Land Management Course for Practitioners - 25th May 2022
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\nCourse content\nTalk 1: Ecology and behaviour\nAn overview of basic biology\, ecology\, behaviour\, disease and rehabilitation. \nTalk 2: Population\, monitoring and the law\nAn overview of recent trends in the UK hedgehog population\, the hedgehog’s conservation status and the legislation surrounding them. \nTalk 3: Threats and mitigation\nAn overview of threats to hedgehogs and discussion around potential solutions and barriers. \nCost: £30 per person\nDuration: Half day (1pm-5pm)\nTutors: Hugh Warwick and Grace Johnson\nLocation: Online (Zoom) \nWhy do I need to attend this course?\nThis online course is aimed at people involved in the management of public spaces or private amenity land. This includes consultants\, landscape architects and developers. \nImmediately recognisable and popular with the public\, hedgehogs provide a means to engage people in biodiversity issues and an intelligent focus for satisfying the requirements of the NERC Act. Hedgehogs are also frequently overlooked in ecological impact assessments. Small management changes can dramatically improve areas of land for this UK BAP species\, potentially reversing its decline and enriching biodiversity more broadly. \nThis course has been produced in partnership with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and developed with hedgehog experts Dr Pat Morris & Dr Nigel Reeve. It has previously been taught as a one day in-person course\, but moving forward there will be a half day virtual option. We are trialling the new virtual format so would appreciate feedback from this session. \nPlease contact us if this is a company booking and you would like us to invoice you rather than booking online. Please note as People’s Trust for Endangered Species is not VAT registered VAT is not added to tickets. By booking on this event you are agreeing to our events terms and conditions. \n
