SUMMARY:Introduction to apple juice and cider-making course
DESCRIPTION:After several years of running their ‘Introduction to apple juice and cider making’ course in Milton Keynes\, Mike & Barbara Jones moved the venue to the ideal tranquil location of the Recreation Ground Hall in Little Horwood. The course is being run for the Midshires Orchard Group (MSOG) and any surplus after costs passed on to MSOG. \nWe have been making apple juice and cider for more than 10 years and over time have learnt that the quality of the cider depends very much on the varieties of apple used. We now source most apples from our own orchards which have been planted with a wide selection of varieties to produce different ciders. \nThis theme\, the importance of variety\, will run through the course\, first in apple tasting\, then in how to blend apple mixes for pressing. Finally\, in the chance to taste several single variety ciders then blend them to get your perfect cider! \n  \nCost: £45 (£35 for MSOG members). \nMinimum age: 18 \nLocation: Little Horwood Recreation Ground Hall\, Church St\, Little Horwood MK170PF \nBring: Apples if you have some (10 kg needed for one gallon). We will have plenty if not. Demijohn and/or clean plastic bottles to take away juice. \nDress: Pressing will be outside\, so dress appropriately taking account of the weather and the messy nature of apple pressing. \nWe will provide: Tea\, coffee\, soft drinks\, biscuits on arrival and later. A simple lunch (soup\, ploughmans\, fruit\, cake). Please let us know of any special requirements. Course notes summarizing the key points outlined in the course. Enough apple juice for you to make a gallon of cider. 2 bottles of cider to take home (you select after sampling!). \nHow to book: email Mike Jones at Lhmikejones@gmail.com to reserve. I will confirm places are available and indicate how to pay.

SUMMARY:Chadlington Apple Day
DESCRIPTION:Chadlington and the surrounding local villages are abound with a vast array of apple varieties. From large private orchards down to the odd apple tree in the garden. And we take Chadlington Apple Day very seriously. With the help of our wonderful headline sponsors Burford Garden Company and Wychwoods Estate Agents\, and partnerships with local organisations such as the Charlbury Sharecroppers Association we’ve been able to grow our apple obsession even more. From finding different and delectable ways to eat them\, juice them\, bob them\, peel them\, grow them\, identify them\, pick them or store them – we’ve got Apple Day covered in Chadlington. \nAdditionally we want to celebrate the Apple within the context of rural life in the Cotswolds. We will bring together stallholders\, including a market stall from locally grown allotment vegetables\, live music\, hog roast and BBQ and of course be plenty of entertainment for children and adults alike from bouncy castle to the infamous jousting horse and community competitions galore. \nSo please come and help us celebrate our apples. It’s a fundraiser for Chadlington Playgroup\, a registered charity that provides excellent pre-school care at affordable prices for local families from Chadlington and surrounding towns and villages. The event date changes from year but the location is the same – in and around Chadlington Memorial Hall with stunning views over the valley.

SUMMARY:Apple Pressing experience - learn to press and bottle apples

SUMMARY:Kingsfield Orchard Heritage Open Day
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe site was part of ‘King’s Fields’ so called it is said because it was where King Richard set up his camp prior to the Battle of Gosford Green. \n  \nIt appears on maps dated around 1860 with many trees and was divided into allotments which were for the use of Freemen of the City. Many old trees remain and some of the structure of the old site is still evident. The site has been neglected for many years having been isolated after the North-South road was built over part of it. It has been colonised by lots of different flora and fauna much of which we are trying to preserve. \nWork in progress restoring an old orchard/allotment site by Coventry Tree Wardens.\nSite was completely overgrown and is being gradually cleared. Wardens will be on hand to guide visitors round the site and discuss progress. \nHope to have Apple pressing and traditional music.
