DESCRIPTION:Join Andy Howard\, experienced fruit tree pruner and owner of the Heritage Fruit Tree Company\, for a day’s training course to learn the theory and practice of winter pruning on site in Warwickshire. \nThis Course will take place at George Browning: Feldon Forest Farm\, at Frankton\, Rugby\, Warks\, CV23 9PD. \nGeorge has an orchard with a variety of younger and older trees\, in varying states of pruning need with different types\, including tip bearers\, so you will be to be able to see different strategies of pruning utilised on site . \nLearn the theory\, skills and practice of winter pruning for fruit trees such as apple and pear. Discover the different methods and techniques used to shape fruit trees\, control their size and influence their productivity. Find out when and how to apply these to suit different circumstances and different types of top fruit. Learn the difference between winter and summer pruning and when and How to prune pip fruit and stone fruit. \nWe then practice the theory on real fruit trees – to gain these skills yourself and help get the confidence to apply them in your own orchard\, garden or community orchard. The emphasis will be on the pruning and care of aged apple trees which have already received some restorative pruning.  This workshop is ideal for anyone who has attended a previous course on restorative pruning or for those who have trees that had some restorative pruning work carried out within the last 5 years. \nThe workshop will take place outdoors\, and much of the day will be spent undertaking practical restorative pruning work using hand tools (particularly pole-saws.) There are toilets\, shelter and tea/coffee making facilities on site. Participants are advised to bring a packed lunch. \nParticipants are advised to bring warm and waterproof clothing and stout\, waterproof footwear. We also ask you to bring a pair of strong work gloves. All tools and PPE will be provided\, although you may bring your own\, if you prefer to do so. DESCRIPTION:It is Apple Season – so we are holding our Fourth Apple Day with lots of lovely apple crafts and activities.  On arrival at Clovelly you will see apple pressing by Gatcombe valley outside the Visitor Centre\, so please do bring a bag of apples.  Watch them being pressed and taste the fresh juice.  Or if you wish\, you can bring more for pasteurisation and bottling for which there will be a charge (£1.90 per 75 cl bottle). \nCrafts and and activities \nOn entry to Clovelly (free for children under 7 years old)\, you will find the Apple Day crafts and activities in the Visitor Centre from 11:00-16:00. The round shape of the apple with the great reds and greens makes the apple a perfect base for creating art. So enjoy some Apple Art with The Plough and either carve\, sculpt\, decorate or do all of them with your apple. \nThere will also be live music\, apple bobbing\, apple stamping and making corn dollies. \nStorytelling\nIsabella Necessity on her Story Bicycle will be there to tell stories of her orchard escapades and share snippets of apple folklore. Isabella is a bicycling botanist who loves to share stories from her incredible journeys around the world with the people she meets along the way. She has flown with the blue butterflies of Brazil in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest\, outwitted trolls in the fjords of Norway\, learnt Kung-Fu on the Mountain of Kunyu and rested in a robin’s nest on Dartmoor. With delightful storytelling\, gorgeous illustrations\, unexpected wonders and a handsome Story Bicycle called Dilys\, Isabella will whisk you away to another world.  \nFarmers market and competition\nThere will be a small farmers market\, including a pick of pumpkins\, vegetables\, herbs\, and cider amongst other stalls. Merry Harriers Garden Centre will also have some of their interesting products on display. The RNLI will be hosting our Apple Crumble competition (so please bring your crumbles at 10:00 to enter).
