SUMMARY:Water Vole Ecology and Field Signs - Monday 8th June 2026
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\nThis training course provides a comprehensive introduction to water vole ecology\, behaviour\, habitat requirements\, and survey techniques. It is designed for anyone with a personal interest in water voles to professional ecologists conducting watercourse surveys for consultancy work. No prior experience is required. \nBy the end of this course\, you will be able to: \n\nUnderstand water vole ecology\, lifecycle\, breeding behaviour\, habitat preferences\, and the key threats they face.\nIdentify water vole field signs\, including droppings\, feeding remains\, burrows\, and latrines\, and confidently distinguish them from similar species such as brown rats.\nIdentify other riparian mammals such as otter and American mink.\nAssess habitat suitability for water voles and recognise good habitat management strategies that will support water voles.\nUnderstand the legislation that protects water voles.\n\nThis course will prepare you to take part in the National Water Vole Monitoring Programme (NWVMP) – PTES’ long-term citizen science project tracking water vole populations across the UK. Volunteers survey a 500m stretch of riverbank annually\, recording field signs using a standardised method. The data collected helps us monitor population trends and identify alert areas where conservation action may be needed. Register for the NWVMP here: https://watervoles.ptes.org/auth/register \n  \nYour tutor: Emily Luck\, BSc (Hons)\, MCIEEM\, MRSB \nEmily is the Water Vole Officer at PTES and has a background in ecological consultancy. She coordinates the NWVMP and works across sectors by collaborating with ENGOs and government agencies on water vole policy and legislation; advising landowners on habitat management and mink eradication; and engaging with students or individuals in water vole research projects. \n  \nDate: Monday 8th June 2026 \nTime: 10:00 – 12:30 \nLocation: Online (Zoom) \nPrice: £15 for conservation volunteers and charity staff /  £30 for ecological consultants \n  \nImage credit: Iain Green

SUMMARY:National Dormouse Conference - 14th November 2026
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\n  \nPeople’s Trust for Endangered Species is the main conservation charity in Britain that focuses on hazel dormice. However\, despite our best efforts\, hazel dormice have been in decline in Britain for over a century. During that time\, the population has fallen and their range has steadily shrunk. So\, what does the future hold for the species? \nThe conference will take place on 14th November 2026 at Reading University. \n  \nThe theme of the conference will be recent dormouse projects including: \n\nDeveloping a National Dormouse Strategy\nPopulation Viability analysis for dormice\nForest rest of Selwood\nDeveloping a Risk Zone Map for Sussex – Sussex survey project\nThe 10-year project at Wyre Forest.\n\n  \nThe conference is aimed at all the volunteers who monitor National Dormouse Monitoring sites and have provided such an important and valuable resource for research. It will also be of interest to ecological consultants who regularly or occasionally come across dormice in the course of their work and also to government organisations and NGO’s who are involved in all aspects of dormouse conservation.
