SUMMARY:Hazel dormouse woodland and hedgerow management - Thursday 12th June 2025
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\n  \nHazel dormice are one of Britain’s most enigmatic species\, but they are hard both to find and study. This is because they are small\, they live in the tree and shrub canopy when active and they come out at night. They are also closely associated with old\, managed woodlands\, where they live\, and with hedgerows\, that they use as dispersal corridors. \n  \nPeople’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) has been the lead conservation charity helping hazel dormice and we manage the national monitoring programme\, the dormouse reintroduction programme\, and advise both conservation groups and ecological consultants on habitat management. \n  \nPTES also manage the Great British Hedgerow Survey which is the standard method of surveying hedgerows in Britain. On completion of the short survey which assesses the current condition of the hedge\, advice is provided for future management. \n  \nThis one-day course on woodland and hedgerow management for dormice will take place at Briddlesford woods on the Isle of Wight which is a private reserve owned by PTES and managed for its mammal assemblage that includes hazel dormice\, red squirrels and woodland bats. \n  \nCourse dates: Thursday 12th June 2025 \nVenue: Black Hut\, Briddlesford Woods\, Isle of Wight \nCost: £50 for Volunteers | £80 for Ecological Consultants \nIf you have any questions\, please email ian.white@ptes.org

SUMMARY:Water Vole Ecology and Field Signs - Thursday 22nd May 2025
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\nThis training course provides a comprehensive introduction to water vole ecology\, behaviour\, habitat requirements\, and survey techniques. It is designed for anyone with a personal interest in water voles to professional ecologists conducting watercourse surveys for consultancy work. No prior experience is required. \nBy the end of this course\, you will be able to: \n\nUnderstand water vole ecology\, lifecycle\, breeding behaviour\, habitat preferences\, and the key threats they face.\nIdentify water vole field signs\, including droppings\, feeding remains\, burrows\, and latrines\, and confidently distinguish them from similar species such as brown rats.\nIdentify other riparian mammals such as otter and American mink.\nAssess habitat suitability for water voles and recognise good habitat management strategies that will support water voles.\nUnderstand the legislation that protects water voles.\n\nThis course will prepare you to take part in the National Water Vole Monitoring Programme (NWVMP) – PTES’ long-term citizen science project tracking water vole populations across the UK. Volunteers survey a 500m stretch of riverbank annually\, recording field signs using a standardised method. The data collected helps us monitor population trends and identify alert areas where conservation action may be needed. Register for the NWVMP here: https://watervoles.ptes.org/auth/register \n  \nYour tutor: Emily Luck\, BSc (Hons)\, MCIEEM\, MRSB \nEmily is the Water Vole Officer at PTES and has a background in ecological consultancy. She coordinates the NWVMP and works across sectors by collaborating with ENGOs and government agencies on water vole policy and legislation; advising landowners on habitat management and mink eradication; and engaging with students or individuals in water vole research projects. \n  \nDate: Thursday 22nd May 2025 \nTime: 14:00 – 15:45 \nLocation: Online (Zoom) \nPrice: £15 for conservation volunteers and charity staff /  £30 for ecological consultants \n  \nImage credit: Iain Green

SUMMARY:Hedgerow myth busting – (So you think you know hedgerows?) - 6th May 2025\, 18:00
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\n  \nHedgerows are an incredible habitat\, offering a wide range of environmental as well as on-farm benefits. But in a lot of ways they can be hugely misunderstood; \nIs trimming hedgerows unnatural? Is the flail killing our hedges? Hedges are a man-made habitat; not as good as a ‘natural’ one? Did hedges lose their value when we got barbed wire? \nWe will discuss the ENORMOUS wildlife value of hedges\, the many ways they benefit us\, their fascinating history\, how they’re holding up nationally\, (what condition are they in?) and how we manage them to ensure they reach their incredible potential. \n  \nDate: Tuesday 6th May 2025 \nTime: 18:00 to 19:30 \nVenue: Online (Zoom) \nPrice: Free

SUMMARY:Water Vole Ecology and Field Signs Training - Thursday 23rd May 2024
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\n  \nThis course will cover water vole ecology\, lifecycle\, habitat\, survey techniques\, and the identification of field signs. \nNo prior knowledge necessary. The course is suitable for anyone with a professional or personal interest in this species\, and is designed to guide you towards taking part in our National Water Vole Monitoring Programme (NWVMP). \nWater voles are fully protected by law\, but they can be elusive and difficult to detect. It is important that NWVMP volunteers\, conservationists\, and ecologists know how to survey for them and other riverbank species. \nBy the end of the training\, you will be able to: \n\nIdentify water vole\, otter and American mink field signs\nUnderstand water vole ecology\, conservation and legislation\nConduct a water vole survey\, and optimise chances of detecting water voles during surveys\nAssess habitat suitability for water voles and explain suitable habitat management techniques\n\n The species identification element of the course will cover a range of water vole field signs (e.g. droppings\, feeding signs\, burrows) in great detail and it will compare them to other easily-confused species. \n  \nDate: Thursday 23rd May \nTime: 2pm to 3:30pm \nCost: Free \nVenue: Online (Zoom) \n  \nYour tutor: Emily Sabin BSc (Hons) MRSB \nEmily is the Water Vole Officer at People’s Trust for Endangered Species. She co-ordinates the NWVMP\, and advises on water vole policy\, research and strategy with NGOs and government agencies. She is also an experienced ecological consultant and has been undertaking water vole surveys for almost 10 years.
