SUMMARY:Hazel dormouse woodland and hedgerow management - Thursday 12th June 2025
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\n  \nHazel dormice are one of Britain’s most enigmatic species\, but they are hard both to find and study. This is because they are small\, they live in the tree and shrub canopy when active and they come out at night. They are also closely associated with old\, managed woodlands\, where they live\, and with hedgerows\, that they use as dispersal corridors. \n  \nPeople’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) has been the lead conservation charity helping hazel dormice and we manage the national monitoring programme\, the dormouse reintroduction programme\, and advise both conservation groups and ecological consultants on habitat management. \n  \nPTES also manage the Great British Hedgerow Survey which is the standard method of surveying hedgerows in Britain. On completion of the short survey which assesses the current condition of the hedge\, advice is provided for future management. \n  \nThis one-day course on woodland and hedgerow management for dormice will take place at Briddlesford woods on the Isle of Wight which is a private reserve owned by PTES and managed for its mammal assemblage that includes hazel dormice\, red squirrels and woodland bats. \n  \nCourse dates: Thursday 12th June 2025 \nVenue: Black Hut\, Briddlesford Woods\, Isle of Wight \nCost: £50 for Volunteers | £80 for Ecological Consultants \nIf you have any questions\, please email ian.white@ptes.org

Did hedges lose their value when we got barbed wire? \nWe will discuss the ENORMOUS wildlife value of hedges\, the many ways they benefit us\, their fascinating history\, how they’re holding up nationally\, (what condition are they in?) and how we manage them to ensure they reach their incredible potential. \n  \nDate: Tuesday 6th May 2025 \nTime: 18:00 to 19:30 \nVenue: Online (Zoom) \nPrice: Free

SUMMARY:Hazel dormouse habitat management and hedgerow management – 23 August 2022
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\nHazel dormice are one of Britain’s most enigmatic species\, but they are hard both to find and study. This is because they are small\, they live in the tree and shrub canopy when active and they come out at night. They are also closely associated with old\, managed woodlands\, where they live\, and with hedgerows\, that they use as dispersal corridors. \nBriddlesford woods on the Isle of Wight is a private reserve owned by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species and managed for its mammal assemblage that includes hazel dormice\, red squirrels and woodland bats. \nPTES has been the lead conservation charity helping hazel dormice and we manage the national monitoring programme\, the dormouse reintroduction programme\, and advise both conservation groups and ecological consultants on habitat management. \nPTES also manage the Great British Hedgerow Survey which is the standard method of surveying hedgerows in Britain. On completion of the short survey which assesses the current condition of the hedge\, advice is provided for future management. \nBriddlesford estate is the the obvious place to run a one-day courses on the Isle of Wight on habitat management for dormice and hedgerow management. \nDate: Tuesday 23rd August 2022 \nCost: £30 per person \nVenue: Black Hut\, Briddlesford Woods\, Isle of Wight \nProgramme: \nThis course will be split into two groups. For 2 ½ hours one group will look at hedgerow surveying and management and the other will look at woodland management for dormice. The groups will then swap and the sessions will be repeated. The sessions will be led by Sarah Barnsley (PTES Hedgerow Officer) and Ian White (Dormouse & Training Officer). \n  \nThe programme is given below: \n9.30 am                            Introduction. \n9.45 am – 12.15 pm       Hedgerow/woodland management. \n12.15 pm – 1.15 pm        Lunch \n1.15 pm – 3.45 pm         Hedgerow/woodland management \n3.45 pm – 4pm               Round up and depart. \n  \nYou will be required to bring a packed lunch (tea\, coffee and biscuits will be provided). \n  \nGetting there \nThere will be minibuses leaving the Red Jet Terminal in West Cowes at 9am to take delegates to Briddlesford woods. Suitable Red Jet ferries leave Southampton at 0750 and 0825. At 4pm\, at the end of the course\, minibuses will return delegates to the Red Jet terminal to catch the 1645 or 1720 service back to Southampton \nIf you wish to take advantage of the minibus transport\, please let us know so that we are able to confirm numbers with the taxi firm prior to the event. \nThe cost of the minibus to and from the course is included in the cost of the course. The Red Jet fare is not. \nAlternatively you can arrange for your own transportation to the site but if you do this we regret that PTES is unable to assist with costs. If you require directions to the Black Hut please let us know. \nNo responsibility for persons not being collected as arranged\, missing ferries etc. will be accepted by PTES. \n  \nIf you have any questions\, please email Ian.white@PTES.org

SUMMARY:Hedgehog Ecology and Land Management Course for Practitioners - 25th May 2022
DESCRIPTION:Book tickets now\nCourse content\nTalk 1: Ecology and behaviour\nAn overview of basic biology\, ecology\, behaviour\, disease and rehabilitation. \nTalk 2: Population\, monitoring and the law\nAn overview of recent trends in the UK hedgehog population\, the hedgehog’s conservation status and the legislation surrounding them. \nTalk 3: Threats and mitigation\nAn overview of threats to hedgehogs and discussion around potential solutions and barriers. \nCost: £30 per person\nDuration: Half day (1pm-5pm)\nTutors: Hugh Warwick and Grace Johnson\nLocation: Online (Zoom) \nWhy do I need to attend this course?\nThis online course is aimed at people involved in the management of public spaces or private amenity land. This includes consultants\, landscape architects and developers. \nImmediately recognisable and popular with the public\, hedgehogs provide a means to engage people in biodiversity issues and an intelligent focus for satisfying the requirements of the NERC Act. Hedgehogs are also frequently overlooked in ecological impact assessments. Small management changes can dramatically improve areas of land for this UK BAP species\, potentially reversing its decline and enriching biodiversity more broadly. \nThis course has been produced in partnership with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) and developed with hedgehog experts Dr Pat Morris & Dr Nigel Reeve. It has previously been taught as a one day in-person course\, but moving forward there will be a half day virtual option. We are trialling the new virtual format so would appreciate feedback from this session. \nPlease contact us if this is a company booking and you would like us to invoice you rather than booking online. Please note as People’s Trust for Endangered Species is not VAT registered VAT is not added to tickets. By booking on this event you are agreeing to our events terms and conditions. \n

SUMMARY:Hedgehog Ecology and Land Management Course for Practitioners
DESCRIPTION:This unique training course provides a professional guide to hedgehog ecology\, surveying and mitigation. \nCourse content\nTalk 1: Ecology and behaviour – an overview of basic biology\, ecology\, behaviour\, disease and rehabilitation\nTalk 2: Threats to hedgehogs and the law – urban and rural threats; UK conservation status and decline; UK legislation; the latest survey methods\nOutdoor session: To reinforce theory\nTalk 3: Land management for hedgehogs – practical advice on management and mitigation \nCost: £75 per person (lunch not included but teas and coffees will be provided)\nDuration: Full day\nTutor: Dr Nigel Reeve. Please email hedgehogs@ptes.org for further details. \nWhy do I need to attend this course?\nHedgehog numbers have declined by a third in the last decade in both rural and urban areas. We need to change the way we manage our land to help support wild hedgehog populations. \nThis course is aimed at people involved in the management of public spaces or private amenity land. This includes consultants\, landscape architects and developers. Immediately recognisable and popular with the public\, hedgehogs provide a means to engage people in biodiversity issues and an intelligent focus for satisfying the requirements of the NERC Act. \nPlease contact us if this is a company booking and you would like us to invoice you rather than booking online. Please note as People’s Trust for Endangered Species is not VAT registered VAT is not added to tickets. By booking on this event you are agreeing to our events terms and conditions.
